Development Engineer on the integration of a rectenna for RF energy harversting - 12 month contract

Job description

IMT Atlantique

Job environment

IMT Atlantique, internationally recognized for the quality of its research, is a leading general engineering school under the authority of the Ministry of Industry and Digital Technologies, ranked in the 3 main international rankings (THE, SHANGAI, QS). With three campuses in Brest, Nantes and Rennes, IMT Atlantique aims to combine digital technology and energy to transform society and industry through training, research and innovation.

The Optics teaching and research department is located on the Brest site and covers several research areas. Among them is the FTG (Flexible Transductors Group) which develops sensor arrays for health and environmental applications using flexible substrates, organic materials and innovative structuring technologies available through the ARAGO platform.

Scientific context

The decrease in power consumption of electronic components has enabled the development of wireless devices. An interesting application concerns IoT connected sensor networks. Wireless sensors allow to collect different data such as temperature, pressure, or humidity, and are used in various domains such as intelligent surveillance systems, home automation, medical or military applications. Today, these sensors are mainly powered by batteries, which implies a limited life span and sometimes a complicated replacement. A promising process consists in recovering the energy available in the ambient environment of these microsystems.

Within the framework of an eco-design project in partnership with an ETI specialized in IoT, we propose to explore solutions for the integration of radio-frequency energy recovery devices. Several technological solutions will be considered by developing additive manufacturing processes (inkjet printing, screen printing and electrolytic recharging) with conductive inks on flexible substrates in order to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing systems while maintaining optimal performance.

In this context, you will work on the integration of the receiving antenna and the RF energy recuperator within the research teams of IMT Atlantique. You will select the substrates compatible with the printing. You will test polyethylene therephthalate and polyethylene naphthalate substrates of different thicknesses for their flexible and integrability properties, while a bibliographical study will be carried out in order to select the most appropriate biosourced paper substrates. You will evaluate the electrical performance of commercial inks (genesink, amepox, ...) whose implementation processes are compatible with the realization of printed electronic boards (PCB) flexible (temperature) and in particular those made of paper (swelling). The effects of aging and humidity will also be evaluated by electrical tests.

You will also evaluate the different techniques of transferring components on these flexible substrates by glue and conductive resin (epotek H20E, ...) or others following the state of the art. The resistivity of the electrical connections will have to be measured with precision to model the parasitic impedances created by the transfer of the components. You will also evolve the minimum size of the tracks allowing the connection of the integrated components like those in a typical box of the radio frequency modules.
