Post-Doctoral position in Operations Research for city logistics - 12 month contract

Job description

IMT Atlantique

1. Context

Présentation of IMT Atlantique :

IMT Atlantique, internationally recognized for the quality of its research, is a leading general engineering school under the authority of the Ministry of Industry and Digital Technologies, ranked in the 3 main international rankings (THE, SHANGAI, QS). With three campuses in Brest, Nantes and Rennes, IMT Atlantique aims to combine digital technology and energy to transform society and industry through training, research and innovation.

Job environment :

The Automation, Production and Computer Sciences Department (DAPI) of ITM Atlantic is based on the Nantes campus. It has a staff of about 100 employees, including about 40 permanent professors and researchers. The research topics of the department are in Control, Robotics, Industrial Engineering, Decision Aiding and Software Engineering. The DAPI is part of the LS2N (Laboratoire des Sciences du Numérique de Nantes, UMR CNRS 6004).

The candidate will join the research team Modelling, Optimization and Decision for Logistics, Industry and Services (modelis), of the LS2N. This team develops operations research methods for optimization and decision support in production and logistics. It seeks to solve both open or poorly solved theoretical problems and applied research problems related to the emergence of new issues, new practices or data available to companies.

Gathering 31 partners from 10 different countries, DECARBOMILE aims to trigger an unprecedented improvement of the green last mile logistics in Europe. The solutions developed in DECARBOMILE will demonstrate the full potential of decarbonised last mile logistics in four living labs (in Logrono - Spain, Nantes -France, Hamburg - Germany and Istanbul - Turkey) and 4 satellites (Tallinn - Estonia, Getafe - Spain, Ghent - Belgium and Sarajevo - Bosnia and Herzegovina) will be involved at a smaller scale to test and study the solution in their own local contexts. The relation with and between stakeholders will be facilitated by the creation of a collaborative urban consolidation logistics framework that will include a digital platform, methodologies for collaboration, and ICT and IoT tools. The delivery methods will be strongly improved with urban consolidation centers, micro urban consolidation centers including smart lockers, innovations on cargo bikes and how they can be used with load pooling for instance, electric barge and more. In this project, IMT Atlantique is involved in the development of network design and vehicle routing algorithms. On the applicative side, a closer collaboration is planned with Nantes metropole to retrieve some experience and expectation from a city. On the software side, IMT Atlantique will collaborate with the GeneGIS (Italia) and ITA Innova (Spain) companies to integrate the optimization algorithms in their systems.

The key researchers involved in the DECARBOMILE project will be Professors Fabien Lehuédé and Olivier Péton.

2. Objective

The post-doc will be the key developer for IMT Atlantique in the DECARBOMILE project. He/she will be involved in the technical specifications and literature review that will be written on the early stage of the project. He/she will be involved in the thinking and design of the optimization algorithms that will be developed to produce a city logistics network design optimization tool. Based on collected or generated data, this optimization tool will provide:

  • Recommendations on where to locate facilities (e.g. urban consolidation centers) and where to use green transportation modes (e.g. cargo bikes) depending on some data and scenario defined by cities.
  • Simulations on the resulting vehicle routes and flow consolidations, showing both economical and environmental impacts of design decisions or local policies.

The candidate will be in charge of programming the optimization algorithms and its APIs with the other information systems in the project. To do so, the candidate will beneficiate of more than ten years of expertise and developments on operations research algorithms for city logistics at IMT Atlantique. In addition, the DECARBOMILE post-doc will participate in collecting and/or generating some data based on open-source data and integrating its developments with other partners. The post-doc will participate in the writing of projects reports and scientific papers. Travels are to be expected in order to attend the workshop meetings, meet the partners and participate to scientific conferences.
