  • On-site
    • Villeneuve d'Ascq, Hauts-de-France, France
  • Informatique et Système d'information

Job description

Discipline : CERI SN

Line Manager : Sylvain LECOMTE

Workplace : Villeneuve d’Ascq, France

Type of contract and duration : Postdoctoral position for a period of 6 month

CONTEXT :

Public establishment belonging to IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom), placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, IMT Nord Europe has three main objectives: providing our students with ethically responsible engineering practice enabling them to solve 21st century issues, carrying out our R&D activities leading to outstanding innovations and supporting territorial development through innovation and entrepreneurship. Ideally positioned at the heart of Europe, 1 hour away from Paris, 30 min from Brussels and 1h30 from London, IMT Nord Europe has strong ambitions to become a main actor of the current industrial transitions, digital and environmental, by combining education and research on engineering and digital technologies.

Located on two main campuses dedicated to research and education in Douai and Lille, IMT Nord Europe offers research facilities of almost 20,000m² in the following areas:

- Digital science,

- Energy and Environment,

- Materials and Processes.

BRIEF:

Context and funding :

IMT NE is working on innovative services, based on drones, for the observation and study of hydro-systems, i.e. aquatic environments, particularly lakes, rivers and canals. The aquatic drones are equipped with sensors to carry out the measurements collected (bathymetry, pH, dissolved oxygen, etc.) that are geolocated by a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver. The use of the drone facilitates access to difficult areas, reduces the time, risks and cost of the supervision of hydro-systems, and improves the accuracy of the results (better coverage, ...). The autonomous mode to pilot the drone have to be improved and tested with the aim to improve again its flexibility.

In this context, IMT NE still wants to develop its services by the design of innovative robotic modular solutions. IMT NE propose a postdoctoral position for 6 months, starting from September 2024.

Research project :

The context of the contract concerns a major topic and priority issues in the short and medium term for the design of robotic modular solutions dedicated to the services we want to propose. He/she will work in research and development, in close collaboration with the project partners, to increase the TRL by proposing innovative software for monitoring the quality of water resources and participate to the design of the drones. He/she will also be responsible for promoting the results in recognised international conferences and international journals of the Q1 and Q2 journals. In order to meet the defined objectives, it will be necessary to: i) capitalise on existing contributions (control of aquatic drones, mapping, simulation environment), ii) deploy in simulation and in real life algorithms for controlling aquatic drones to complement the network of fixed sensors, and iii) to propose a software package incorporating all these functionalities for the for the automatic construction of spatio-temporal maps of water quality.

Key-words: Aquatic drones, Robotics, Large-scale water systems, Environmental issues.
