Type of contract and duration: Fixed term contract of 24-month position

Workplace: Bourseul Campus, Douai, France

Context:

A public establishment belonging to IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom), placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry, IMT Nord Europe has three main objectives: providing our students with ethically responsible engineering practice enabling them to solve 21st century issues, carrying out our R&D activities leading to outstanding innovations and supporting territorial development through innovation and entrepreneurship. Ideally positioned at the heart of Europe, an hour away from Paris, 30 min from Brussels and an hour and a half from London, IMT Nord Europe has strong ambitions to become a main actor of the current industrial transitions, digital and environmental, by combining education and research on engineering and digital technologies.

The position is vacant within the Centre for Energy and Environment, in the research unit working on Atmospheric Science, and more precisely within the ACTRIS-EU topical centre for reactive trace gases in-situ measurements (CiGas: https://www.actris.eu/topical-centre/cigas). The Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS) is a distributed RI dedicated to high-quality observation of aerosol, clouds, trace gases and exploration of their interactions (https://www.actris.eu) by building on the long-term collaboration within the atmospheric science community, sustained by a series of EU-funded projects. Within this scope, CiGas-IMT Nord Europe is involved in many projects at national (ANR) and European levels (Green deal, EURAMET, COPERNICUS, etc.).

Brief role description:

The core activities of the engineer are to contribute to the operation of CiGas and the associated projects by:

  • Organizing the technical activities of CiGas-IMT Nord Europe
  • Ensuring synergy between CiGas-IMT Nord Europe activities and CiGas - EU
  • Developing, optimizing, and testing advanced measurement techniques for reactive trace gases (mass spectrometry and chromatography techniques)
  • Developing and applying QA/QC protocols and guidelines, provided by CiGas, to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) datasets
  • Participating in field campaigns and conducting lab experiments
  • Handling experimental datasets using advanced statistical tools
  • Writing reports and contributing to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Performing technical training in French and English
  • Participating in audit for observational and exploratory platforms in France and Europe

The person recruited will work mainly within CiGas-IMT Nord Europe team, and will collaborate with international partners and established consortium. This will be a great opportunity for her/him to work with top-level scientist experts in the measurement of reactive trace gases.

Job requirements

Profile of the candidate:

The candidate must hold a Master's or Engineering degree (Bac +5) in the field of environmental sciences;

Instrumentation, measurement, and quality assurance; physics; physical chemistry; or analytical chemistry.

Skills

  • Previous experience with atmospheric measurement techniques in the field and/or the laboratory
  • Competence in metrology and quality assurance
  • Operational level with data analysis softwares
  • Writing reports
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team
  • Project management
  • Communication
  • English: > B2-C1 level
  • French: > B2 level

Knowledge

  • Good knowledge in atmospheric science
  • knowledge related to research infrastructure would be an asset

The job is to be filled as to October 1st, or November 1st 2024 for a period of 24 months.
