Associate professor in Artificial Intelligence and Decision Aid: Application to Supply Chain

  • On-site
    • Nantes, Pays-de-la-Loire, France
  • Data analytics et Intelligence artificielle

Job description

IMT Atlantique, internationally recognised for the quality of its research, is a leading technological university under the authority of the Ministry of Industry and Digital Technologies, ranked in the three main international rankings (THE, SHANGHAI, QS).

The position is open on the campus of Nantes within the DAPI (Automation, Production and Computer Science) department, in association with the TASC team of the LS2N joint research unit (Laboratoire des Sciences du Numérique de Nantes). The DAPI department is organized into teaching and research groups. The Optimization and Decision Support group includes two teams: Modelis, specializing in Operations Research, and TASC.

The TASC team conducts research in Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a particular focus on symbolic AI, and more specifically on Constraint Programming (CP) and Decision Support. The team has a strong positioning in human-centered AI and hybrid symbolic AI. Its activities rely on generic methods and reusable libraries integrated into its open-source solver Choco, which is internationally recognized and regularly awarded in scientific competitions. In the area of Supply Chain applications, TASC maintains close links with the Modelis team.

Thematic and research challenges

The position is aligned with the core strategic developments of the DAPI on Industry of the Future and of the TASC team, within a context marked by the increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence and Operations Research in industrial applications, particularly in assignment and sizing problems, planning and scheduling, and Supply Chain. The objectives are multiple: enhancing TASC’s scientific leadership in hybrid symbolic AI and Human–AI interaction; strengthening and expanding collaborations with the Modelis team; supporting the ongoing development of the Choco solver; and contributing to current ANR and industrial projects, as well as to the submission of new research proposals.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct high-level research in Constraint Programming (CP), symbolic AI, and hybrid decision-support methods – including optimization, machine learning, and data mining – in line with the team’s strategic priorities: the Choco solver, Human–AI interaction, and hybrid symbolic AI. In addition, a strong focus is expected on industrial application domains, such as green Supply Chain and sustainable logistics, with a particular interest in explainable, transparent, and frugal approaches.

Education

Located on three attractive campuses, IMT Atlantique boasts a strong international dynamic while remaining on a human scale. In its various education programs conferring a Master degree (engineering and masters), students are confronted with real-life problem situations through a variety of pedagogical approaches. The ambition of IMT Atlantique is to train high-potential young professionals, capable of mobilising a broad spectrum of skills in real-life situations, in a variety of environments (production, research, business creation, etc.) and socio-economic fields.

Involved both in the core curriculum and in the elective courses, the recruited candidate will contribute to teaching optimisation and decision-making for supply chain management, and will deliver part of the AI curses in several programs. He/she will also participate in the organization and delivery of the FISE Common Training Program, particularly in Mathematics, and contribute to the ongoing development of the FISE, FISA, and Master’s programs, as well as to the establishment of an Erasmus Mundus Master’s program focused on Supply Chain. Engaged in cross-disciplinary, interdisciplinary activities or those linked to companies: tutoring of projects/internships, oral presentations, coaching, etc. They will be invited to propose new projects, programs and related teaching methodologies, particularly inspired and supported by industrial requirements and partnerships. https://www.imt-atlantique.fr/en/study

Collective responsibility and involvement in economic development

Particular attention will be focused on the candidate's ability to get involved in the collective life of the school: contributing to, or piloting, cross-disciplinary projects (e.g. on ecological transition), taking on responsibilities (training programs, research projects, teaching or research teams) or participating in bodies such as the teaching committee, school council, and social administration committee. The recruited candidate is also expected to actively participate in the community life of the DAPI department and the LS2N research unit, including engagement in cross-disciplinary initiatives and collective activities.

In addition, in an environment of privileged relations with major national and international industrial partners, as well as a dense network of SMEs and start-ups, the hired faculty member will contribute to the school's reputation and economic development, particularly through the valorisation of their work by patenting or technology transfer.

With 250 permanent faculty members, 2,300 students, including 340 PhD students, IMT Atlantique produces 700 publications each year and raises 28.3M€ in research funds.
