Unit: Centre for Energy and Environment

Line Manager: Director of the Center for Energy and Environment

Type of contract: Permanent academic position of assistant professor

Workplace: Dunkirk (France), with occasional travels to Douai

CONTEXT :

Public establishment belonging to IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom), placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, IMT Nord Europe has three main objectives: providing our students with ethically responsible engineering practice enabling them to solve 21st century issues, carrying out our R&D activities leading to outstanding innovations and supporting territorial development through innovation and entrepreneurship. Ideally positioned at the heart of Europe, 1 hour away from Paris, 30 min from Brussels and 1h30 from London, IMT Nord Europe has strong ambitions to become a main actor of the current industrial, digital and environmental transitions, by combining education and research on engineering and digital technologies.

Located on two main campuses dedicated to research and education in Douai and Lille, IMT Nord Europe offers research facilities of almost 20,000m² in the following areas :

  • Digital Systems
  • Energy and Environment
  • Materials and Processes

For more information, see: https://imt-nord-europe.fr/en/

The position is to be filled within the Energy and Environment Teaching, Research, and Innovation Center (CERI EE). In addition to doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, this center includes 30 teacher-researchers, 12 engineers and technicians, and 2 administrative assistants. It is currently organized into two research domains: Atmospheric Sciences and Energy Efficiency of Components, Systems and Processes. CERI EE also has an instrumental technical center and several national and international centers of expertise.

IMT Nord Europe wishes to strengthen the skills of CERI EE, within the Energy, Fluids and Transfers team.

The candidate will join this research team, which focuses on intensifying transfer phenomena in thermo-fluidic components at various scales. The targeted applications are in the fields of process engineering and energetics, especially for society decarbonization purposes. Experimental and numerical approaches are concurrently employed to improve energy efficiency at the component, energy system, or process scale. This generally requires enhancing performance by means of flow control, use of rheological behavior of complex fluids, surface structuring, and, if applicable, transfers in solid parts.

ACTIVITIES :

Under the authority of the Director of the Energy and Environment CERI (Teaching, Research, and Innovation Center), the position holder will actively participate in both teaching activities and the development of research and technology transfer projects within the Energy, Fluids and Transfers team.

Teaching Activities :

The position holder must have expertise in the fields of Fluid Mechanics, Thermal and Process Engineering on both fondamentals and applied topics, which will enable him/her to be involved at various levels in the teaching process.

Specifically, he/she will:

  • Participate in teaching activities (lectures, tutorials/laboratories, engineering projects) for engineering and/or specialized master's programs in his/her field of expertise, with some courses possibly being taught in English.
  • Contribute to the implementation of pedagogical innovations.
  • Engage in educational supervision activities (projects, entrance examination, tutoring).
  • Participate, by assisting the training program coordinators, in the design and implementation of courses (engineering programs, masters, specialized masters, professional training, etc.).

Research and Technology Transfer Activities :

The main mission of the position holder is to undertake developments related to the research team's activities. Specifically, he/she will:

  • Initiate and lead research projects and co-supervise PhD students in the fields of numerical simulation of two-phase flows, involving phase change phenomena. The objectives are related to the thermal management of equipments, and the performances enhancement of thermo-fluidic components in various industrial applications, including electromobility, with the targeted aim of society decarbonization.
  • Communicate on his/her research through scientific publications, patents and presentations.
  • Develop research and technology transfer actions in collaboration with private and/or academic partners.
  • Promote and develop the team's themes, the Center, and the Institut Mines Télécom in general.
  • Participate in regional and/or international group activities and organize scientific events.
  • Aim to prepare a Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (Habilitation to Supervise Research).
